Medicare Supplement insurance, also known as Medigap, are plans that help beneficiaries pay for some expenses that Original Medicare Parts A and B don’t cover. Some plans help pay for copayments, coinsurance, some deductibles, emergency health care outside the United States, and more.
Medigap plans are sold by private insurance companies that are affiliated with Medicare. Each insurer chooses which Medigap plans to sell, but if they opt to sell any plans, they must offer Plan A.
There are 10 different Medigap plans: A, B, C, D, F, G, K, L, M, and N. However, Plans C and F are no longer available for people who are new to Medicare. Medigap plans are standardized according to their letter. They are guaranteed renewable even if you have issues with your health or your health changes. One plan covers one beneficiary, so if you and your spouse both want coverage, you’ll need to get two plans.
When can you enroll in Medigap Plan N?
When you are 65 years old and enrolled in Medicare B, you will begin your Medigap Open Enrollment Period. During this six-month period, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in your state. You won’t be subject to medical underwriting. If you wait until this period ends to buy a Medigap plan, you could be charged more or refused coverage because of pre-existing conditions.
Keep in mind, you may only buy a Medigap plan if you have Original Medicare. You can’t have Medigap if you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan.

- Part B coinsurance or copayments, except for copayments of up to $50 for emergency room visits if you aren’t admitted into the hospital as an inpatient because of the visit. It also doesn’t cover copayments of up to $20 for certain office visits.
Medigap Plan N also covers 80 percent of foreign travel emergency care. But it doesn’t cover your Part B deductibles or excess charges.
How much does Medicare Supplement Plan N cost per month?
The average monthly premium for any Medigap plan is between $50 and $300.

- When you buy a Medigap plan
- Use of tobacco products
- Health issues
- Your gender
- Where you live
- Your age
- Which plan you purchase
- Who the provider is
- Which rating method your provider uses to set the premium price (community-rated, issue-age rated, or attained-age rated)
Together with your monthly Medigap premium, you must also pay your Part B premium, and Part D premium if you have prescription drug coverage.
